A NIGHT FACING AN ERUPTING VOLCANO

You climb all day through the forest, then across the ash. That evening at camp, right in front of you: the Volcán de Fuego lighting up every twenty minutes, spraying lava into the starry sky while you sip hot chocolate by the fire. The next morning, you wake up above the clouds. It's huge, it's intense, and it's the memory everyone brings home.

Arrival & settling in at Antigua
▾

We meet up in the morning at La Aurora airport. Straight transfer to Antigua, the colonial town nestled between three volcanoes. Check-in in the early afternoon, then a first wander through the cobbled streets to get to know each other over a Guatemalan coffee.

The colonial town at our own pace
▾

A free day to explore Antigua at our own pace: the Santa Catalina arch, the ruins, the markets, the café terraces. No fixed schedule, just time to soak up the town and get to know each other. Rest up by the end of the day — tomorrow, we climb.

Climbing the Acatenango
Night at camp facing the Fuego
▾

We set off in the morning for La Soledad, with the trek starting late morning. Lunch on the volcano, then we reach camp in the early afternoon. Campfire, hot drinks and dinner facing the Fuego as it lights up the night.

✨ Optional, for those who want to go further: hiking to the summit of the Acatenango at sunset, and climbing the Fuego.

Waking up facing the Fuego
Descent & optional hot springs spa
▾

For the boldest, a wake-up before dawn: the climb up the Volcán de Fuego to be there at sunrise and witness the most beautiful sunrise of your life (optional). Breakfast at camp, descent in the morning, back to Antigua before noon. In the afternoon: rest, or the hot springs at the Kawilal spa (optional).

Off to Lake Atitlán

▾

An early start toward Lake Atitlán, a water-filled crater ringed by three volcanoes. Boat over to San Juan La Laguna: textile, art, cacao and honey cooperatives, then up to the Kaqasiiwaan viewpoint. Transfer to Panajachel at the end of the day, settling into the hotel on the lakeshore.

Chichicastenango
The most famous Mayan market in Central America
▾

A morning departure for Chichicastenango: the Moreria, the Gucumatz arch, the thousand-colored cemetery, the Santo Tomás church and the huge market — textiles, masks, flowers. We leave in the early afternoon for Guatemala City, reaching the hotel by late afternoon.

An early start to the airport, then a morning flight to Mundo Maya (9 kg checked bag included). A free day on the island of Flores, set on Lake Petén Itzá: colorful lanes, a swim, sunset. Get to bed early — tomorrow, a Mayan wake-up call.

We leave in the dead of night and reach the park before dawn. The sun rises over the jungle from Temple IV, with howler monkeys as the soundtrack. A tour of the Mayan city with a local guide, back to Flores by noon, an afternoon flight, and settling into the hotel in Guatemala City by the end of the day.

THE FAQ

I'm coming solo, is that a problem?
▾
Not at all: most people come on their own! You'll share a twin room (two single beds), or bring a friend along. And between the group, the evenings around the fire and Gaia, you won't be on your own for long.
Is everything really guaranteed?
▾
Yes. The trek, the domestic flight, the hotels and the guides are all contracted through DevlopMint Travel, a licensed travel agency. The trip is confirmed once everything is locked in, otherwise you're refunded in full.
How late can I book my spot?
▾
As long as there are spots left. The price shown when you book is locked in: deposit paid = price frozen.
What if the plan has to change on the ground?
▾
The weather and volcanic activity can shake up a day. When that happens we swap in an equivalent activity, safety always comes first, and we let you know as soon as we can.
I'm booking my own flights: what if the dates shift?
▾
International flights aren't included, you book those yourself. Wait for the trip to be confirmed before you buy, or grab a changeable ticket. Good to know: arrive on February 8 before 10am at La Aurora airport (Guatemala City), depart on February 16 after 2pm.
What fitness level do I need?
▾
Acatenango is the one big day of effort on the trip: it's a climb, but the group moves together at the pace of the slowest, and the guides carry some of the gear. If you walk now and then, you'll do just fine. The rest of the trip is easygoing.
When do I pay the balance?
▾
The balance is due by December 30, 2026 at the latest. You'll get an email reminder with the payment link.
Which insurance should I take?
▾
Cancellation and assistance insurance is strongly recommended, and best taken out as soon as you book. Check that it covers: high-altitude hiking up to 4,000m, mountain search-and-rescue costs, medical expenses and repatriation. A lot of standard policies stop at 3,000m. If you don't know where to start, message us on WhatsApp: we can point you to a plan that fits.
What if I cancel my spot?
▾
A package trip doesn't come with a right of withdrawal. Once the trip is confirmed, the deposit is non-refundable, and any cancellation triggers fees matching what we've already committed to our providers (hotels, local agency, activities, flights). Those fees rise as departure gets closer and can reach 100% of the price. That's exactly what cancellation insurance covers, so we really do recommend it. Full details in the terms.
When is the trip 100% confirmed?
▾
As soon as the group reaches 8 people and everything is locked in. We confirm it to you in writing, by December 18, 2026 at the latest. If the trip weren't to go ahead by then, your deposit is refunded in full.
Passport, visa, vaccines: is that on me?
▾
Yes, that's on you: a passport valid for 6 months after you get back, no visa for Europeans (stays < 90 days), no mandatory vaccines. We'll send you a full checklist once you've booked.
What if Gaia can't make it?
▾
Gaia can't wait and fully intends to be there from start to finish! But life happens. If something comes up, the trip goes ahead and a team leader steps in: the program, the local guides and everything included stay exactly the same. This doesn't give a right to a free cancellation or a refund.
